Making Your Enrollment Decisions

When you first are eligible for benefits with JHU–whether you are newly hired or are just becoming eligible for benefits–you’ll be asked to make some important decisions.

You'll need to make enrollment decisions within 30 days of initial benefits enrollment notification. Your elections are effective on your hire/eligibility date. The chart below summarizes your enrollment decisions.

For these benefits… When to enroll…
 
Medical, dental, flexible spending accounts, short-term disability, life insurance (including dependent life), personal accident insurance

Voluntary benefits:
Vision, critical illness insurance, legal insurance
Within your first 30 days of initial benefits enrollment notification. Enrollment effective on your hire date.
Note: If you do not receive benefits enrollment paperwork within 2 weeks of hire date, contact JHU Benefits Service Center.
403(b) Retirement Plan Available immediately upon hire or new eligibility; you may enroll at any time.
Voluntary benefits:
Auto and home-owner’s insurance, long–term care insurance, accident insurance
At any time

As you prepare to enroll, you should have your dependents’ names, birth dates, and Social Security numbers on hand, as well as names, birth dates, and addresses of your beneficiary(ies).

Take Action

Shortly after you become eligible for benefits, you will receive a Choices Summary form by email (if available) or by mail to your home address. Please complete and return this form to the Benefits Service Center by the due date indicated on the document.

If You Don’t Take Action

If you are a new employee or newly eligible and do not enroll in your benefits within 30 days of initial benefits enrollment notification, you will receive the default benefit coverage listed in the chart below. Your next opportunity to enroll will be during annual enrollment, unless you have a qualified life event.
